Sewing Machine Help Needed

I have a problem with my sewing machine - the upper thread tangles in the feed dogs after a couple of stitches.
So far I have stripped the machine down, cleaned it, oiled it, changed the needle (which is correctly inserted), re-threaded it, changed bobbins (the drop in bobbin is correctly inserted) and held both threads for the first couple of stitches. Nothing works. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

No, there is no thread under the plate. I have stripped it down and cleaned it twice

May I suggest that during the incapacity of your labour saving device you revert to the time-honoured method of thimble, thread, needle and bodkin. These have served may family well ever since the Norman Conquest.

I have had almost the same problem today - took hours to discover the needle was just slightly bent. You may be using the wrong needle or, more likely, the wrong foot.

Could it be that the thread which has been put on the bobbin is not of the correct tension? That makes a huge difference - sometimes the thread just winds on and is not tight enough. Try winding another bobbin tightly and see if it makes a difference.

Orbiter - very droll. If you could see the amount of sewing I have to do....I would be at it for ever

atlanta, thanks for the suggestion. I have put a new needle in and both me & Mr O are in agreement it is straight. It is the correct size and the foot is the standard one for straight stitching.

jamesnan- that was one of my first thoughts. I have tried several bobbins and diferent top threads and it makes no difference.Thanks anyway.

I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and have someone look at it.

Mrs O, when you say you'very held both threads for the first couple of stitches .. have you gently pulled each thread through to see if they are running freely?

Mrs O, did you sort the problem out? I had my machine out earlier & had the same problem. I re-threaded the top & found I hadn't fed it on to either the lever or the thread take up spring ( see earlier diagram) Slightly different on mine but you know what I mean, the thread hooks on to first hook thenoe down & threads through another gap then down to the needle.
