Painting Furniture.

Have any of you painted your furniture? I have a beautiful pine wardrobe. It was very expensive, not that cheap pine you can buy, but I am rather fed up with it. I fancy painting it with that Annie Sloane paint but I'd like somebody's opinion. Will the paint chip and look grotty. Did you rub the edges and wax? Thank you.

Thanks Tony. I'm dying to have a go, but I'd hate it if it started to look scraped and chipped. We've got so much wood in our cottage, I'm trying of it!

I think it will be ok so long as it is done right, horseshoes. If it is varnished after the painting it should give the paint some protection from scrapes and chips, don't forget you can get different finishes with varnish theres Matt, satin or gloss.

Horseshoes, if this is a really fine item of furniture and has a monetary, sentimental, or both value, I wouldn't use it as a "guinea pig" if you haven't done any major refinishing before. Pick up something from a second-hand store, do some reading, and start with that. Once you embark upon the refinishing or restoring road there are not too many "undo" buttons along the way.

Painting with emulsion then varnishing to protect it is making work. Emulsion doesnt have good adhesion to non- absorbent surfaces. Just use a one coat gloss paint after rubbing down with a fine sandpaper, you don't need to use a sander as all you need to do is achieve a dull finish for adhesion.
