Slight Water Leak Damage - Plaster

I had a slight water leak sometime ago. The leak was sorted back then but I've only just got round to sorting out the plaster damage to the kitchen ceiling. I've removed the loose plaster, which is A5 sized and could probably do with removing abit more. My question is, with the right stuff is it possible for me, a DIY amateur, to skim/fill this in? If so, what do you think would be the best materials to use?

Yes not very hard to do. I would get a piece of plasterboard, cut part of it slightly bigger than the hole, ie if it is A5 then cut between that and A4. Then cut another piece just about the size of the hole and stick this to the centre of the first piece using PVA glue. Make a very small hole in the middle of the 2 pieces and put a bit of string through, then spread some glue to the bigger bit and feed it through the hole holding the string put in place holding the string so it sticks to the plasterboard. Make sure you clean any bits of dust and rubbish away around the hole before glueing in place. Put a small weight on the end of string until glue has dried, then cut off string. Then fill with polyfiller and sand so it matches in with rest of ceiling. Then finish as you wish.

Forgot to put if there are any water stains in the area then put on a stain block before painting as it will just bleed through otherwise. If you haven't got stain block but do have oil based paint then some undercoat and gloss mixed together will work just as well.

It's not a difficult repair, but like everything else, it's easy if you know how. Have a look on You Tube and search for "drywall plasterboard repair"
When you see it being done, it all becomes clearer .

It's not a hole in a ceiling, but a hole in a wall .. same principles.


Just a little tip .. check how thick your existing plasterboard is, then you don't end up buying some that is too thick.
