Can I Stop My Neighbour Coming Through My Back Garden Even Though Its Shared Access?

I rent a house on the end of a terrace block of 4 houses. the middle houses have shared acecess for the back gardens with the house nearest to the end. my neighbor on multiple occasions has caused problems. when he gets drunk on weekends he gets in such a state. he's tried opening my door and tried forcing his way in when I opened it because he cant tell which house is his, he has broken the gate and fence which seperate our gardens by falling over and couple of weeks ago I opend my back door in middle of night to find him attacking my bin and getting very abusive when I confronted him. any advice would be much appreciated.

Does he rent too? If so his landlord, or if you prefer, police, 999 when he is doing it. Its also antisocial behaviour so you might also want to think about involving the council.

sorry, forgot to add, you probably can't block the access but you can take steps to get him stopped from harassing you and destroying your property when he is drunk.

We had this problem when we rented a few years back - ours had trhe garden with the alleyway for x4 houses to get to their back gardens. You can't legally block access, but you could make it more difficult to access it whilst drunk to protect your property.
For example - Put on a coded padlock to your gates (of course - give all of your neighbours the code so that legally they still have access, but your tiresome neighbour is unlikely to remember the code when drunk so 'should' get bored trying and go to his front door instead.

Doe's he rent? If so, find out the landlord and make a formal complaint - Council tenant? if so, three complaints from neighbours and they will be moved on.
If they are not renting, report the disturbances to the police - if he is damaging your property - Don't stand for it! Especially if he is abusive when you confront him, the police 'should' provide you with advice and back up.
