I would like to lay laminate flooring on the top landing,and carpet the stairs. How do I join both at top?

There are lots of ways depending on things such as the position of the join and the thickness of the laminate/carpet. What you must avoid is any ridge at the top of the stairs - for obvious reasons! Go to a local carpet shop and explain what you are doing. They will advise you on the most appropriate fixing.
