he needs to transfer ownership to you somehow. Is it registered on the land Registry? If so he can transfer ownership there. If not, he can register it and then give it to you. make sure you use the .gov website and not one of the others that looks like its the official one and will charge you to do what you can do yourself.
Do please take Woof's advice and make sure you have and keep proof that you now own this land.

When I bought a house my solicitor....now jailed....didn't pick up that half the garden wasn't on the deeds....it had been given to the man who sold it to me by the then next door neighbour in the fifties......

It cost me a lot of money and effort to correct this when I wanted to sell....x

Thank you so much, I was going to go to solicitors being as he is giving us the land, it is Registered we said we would pay the fees
That's good......I'm sure it won't be too expensive in your case to have everything done legally.....my problem was finding all the relatives of two dead men to make sure they didn't hold title to the land.....x
you shouldn't need a solicitor. Here is what you need. If you have any questions, contact the land registry and ask, they are very helpful.
