Bathsheba - You can buy a washing machine cleaner (Homebase do an own brand one) which cleans and deodorises, I find that helps.

Oh thanks Margo. I've found some bicarb, so I've chucked that in for good measure ;)

I have also given up washing at 30 degrees as I find that causes the mustiness. Using 40 deg wash and it doesn't occur.
It's just not worth me going through this ... so have a look at all the causes of a smelly washing machine.

have you cleaned the filter normally found behind little flap on the bottom of machine and in the rubber seal of the door ?
Question Author
@Cathy,....yep, that could be the cause, plus I always use non-bio.

@alava...thsnkd for that.

@mallyh...have I 'eck, but I will ;)

Thanks to all

Home Bargains sell a washing machine cleaner. Empty crystals in and run empty on an over 60 degree cycle. Cured the problem with mine. Other brands are available lol.
Never used to be a problem in the days of top loaders and boil washes and clothes that were made to expect them. Now-a-days the moulds & bugs get an easy existence of it.
once cleaned, make sure you leave the door slightly open when not in use too.

@Boo,...thanks for that...I always mean to, but then somehow it gets closed ;)

I use washing soda in with washing powder in the 60 degree wash .It softens the water as we live in a really hard water area and keeps the machine clean .
The only time I ever had a smelly machine was by using those liquid tab things .They gunged up me pipes and I had a terible stinky machine so I went back to powder.
I'm not a great believer in this 30 degree wash malarkey especially for towels and underwear and whites . You can't kill bacteria at low temps .I only use a low temp for clothes that need a gentle wash .
