Roof Cleaning

tomorrow we are getting a quote for cleaning and treating the roof of our two bed bungalow, can anyone give us an idea how much to expect? so we won't get ripped off.

Cecil ... I don't want to make things difficult, but roofs don't need cleaning (maybe the odd scrape if moss has built up), and they certainly don't need sealing.

These people may be perfectly kosher, but I've seen several cases where they walk all over the roof and crack a load of tiles. (There is a proper way to walk on roofs by the way.)

I agree, totally unnecessary work. I would cancel unless you have a very good reason for getting it done

My late mother-in-law had this done to her roof.....from some people who went round the doors in her area.
They charged her three or four hundred pounds for the work which was totally unnecessary.
We do not think they did any actual damage, other than ripping off a frail old lady.
Think hard about whether you need this job doing or not.

I seem to remember seeing something on this subject on Watchdog a few years ago, was a rip off.

Completely unnecessary, you'll be getting ripped-off at any price. Phone them and cancel, don't be bullied. If anyone tries it on, remember you have a brother/son/nephew in the police force.

thanks so much that's a great help, we will just get someone local to remove the moss instead, as it makes such a terrible mess on the path and blocks the gutters after heavy rain, thanks again you have saved us money.

I have done this myself off a ladder, the reason! the tiles were mossed over with pieces dropping into the Gutters, the roof has come up well with no damage as I had an extension for my power wash, for a company to come out they would use Scaffolding as The Builder knows, there's not many company's out there would use a ladder due to insurance, I used Jayes Fluid neat & in a Spray Canister.

TWR; I don't understand your specific concern with moss. Gutters have to be occasionally cleaned of the debris of leaves etc. anyway. What is important is having wire or plastic cages to stop anything entering the drain pipe. If it falls on your garden path/drive you sweep it up with everything else.
'Roof cleaning' is something I've never heard of before, in either town or country.

I pay my window cleaner £10 to clear my gutters when it is evident they need doing, probably every 2 - 3 years. I get a fair bit of moss falling on to the patio and drive and it is a lot easier to clean it up from there than when it's on the roof

Following on HC's point about the window cleaner - the guy who cleans our neighbours seems to have 'made an offer' to tidy up gutters and stuff sprouting from chimneys. Most folk are out when the window cleaner comes. He walked all over their roofs, no safety precautions and no roof ladders. I expect a few cracked tiles will have resulted from his tender attentions.

If I did intend to go upon the Roof Mosaic it would be with a Cat Ladder, this way you are not footing the tiles, by going onto the tilesas you say can cause cracks " Leaks maybe".
