I've now suffered memory foam/latex foam/ normal foam for several years and have reached the conclusion that I make a hole in each one where I sit/sleep which never properly returns to normal. I think I need a different type of mattress. I am not a fan of just springs. Are there any other sorts out there which retain their shape /support over a long period but which are still good for bad backs?

Try a water bed.
Test out a pocket sprung mattress at your local bed store.

It's also important to turn the mattress every 6 months.
One of the best night's sleep I remember (admittedly after an exhausting day) was in Montana USA, and I slept on a Buckwheat mattress and pillow. The pillow was warmed in front of a log fire and I took it to bed. The matreess sort of matched my body shape but offered really good support.
A few years later when I needed to buy a new mattress I sourced one but it was really very expensive. I bought a memory foam one instead and it was ***,
Memory foam mattresses are really horrible. Plenty other EXCELLENT mattresses available. If you want, you can always get just a mattress topper if you need it.
A good quality sprung mattress is much better than memory foam, especially if you have a dodgy back. We recently "retired" our 15-year old sprung one to the spare bedroom and all our guests say "What a fantastic bed!". We've replaced it with another sprung one and have added a mattress-topper.
I have an orthopedic mattress sprung with dimples no buttons which does not turn over..specific instruction say DO NOT turn....Slumberland..very comfy...you just need to go to a good shop and try them !
