My latest halogen heater has blown all but one of its tubes after just one month of normal use. Having gone through at least three of these things in as many years, I need recommendations for a free-standing (& portable) heater, which doesn't make any noise (so no hot air blowers).

I'm with gingejbee and I don't like those halogen heaters either, they give me a headache. I have 2 of the oil filled heaters, they're great, I only put them on for a short while, they have a thermostat and are excellent when pottering around in the morning before anyone gets up and the main heating comes on. After many year's service, my cheapy from Aldi (or was it Lidl?) packed up earlier this winter and I invested in the second one down on this page, from Machine Mart (who've got stores in most parts of the country):

It's an excellent product and I can thoroughly recommend it (unless, of course, real portability is important to you - I certainly wouldn't want to lug it up and down stairs!)
