I've never had to sound insulate a room, but my gut feeling is that a thin layer of polyurethane is going to be disappointing. It'd have thought you'd need a bigger (100mm+) cavity either air filled or filled with a known good sound insulator.

But maybe someone with experience will post soon.

thanks old geezer.
Someone once said that dealing with sound is rather like trying to contain water. It just seeps everywhere. Two completely different types of sound transmission need dealing with.

The first is - Airborne sound. Simply the sound you hear from next door, or even from the street, carried by air.

The other is - Impact sound. When someone bangs on the wall, or even any wall or floor connected to your party wall.

Sealing up gaps of course is obvious, but there's no substitute for "density". A thick, concrete wall is ideal, but not an option here. Ivor's link below is a good alternative though. That, combined with OG's cavity idea would be pretty good.

There are all kinds of soundproofing products around that can help to some extent, but a simpler option is to........

Make up a simple studwork wall and fix it 50mm away from the existing one. Fix it all around with flexible, rubber mountings. This will help reduce Impact sound transmission.

Fill the cavity and the studwork with "Rockwool" sound insulation.

Cover the stud wall with something like the one in Ivor's link, or, at lest one layer of "Gyproc Soundbloc" plasterboard. Two layers is a lot better. This will help to reduce Airborne sound.

Sounds like "a bit of a game", as they say down here in the Shires, but it's a simple DIY job. You don't have to plaster it if you don't want to.

Ivor and builder,

Thanks for your advice the rockwool path looks new to me very interesting plenty of youtube videos. The reason I am asking about sound proofing is that my neighbours starts to use his phone very late everyday in his bedroom which wakes me up and also they have a TV on the partition wall.
Since your problem is with airborne sound, then the Rockwool plus the Soundbloc board should make a difference.

In this case, you could avoid messing around with flexible mountings and simply fix the stud in place in the usual way.

builder, I am gonna struggle with making a studwork wall reason being from the party wall to the wall that leads into the bedroom is only 40cm. The sound where it is comming from there used to be the chimmeny but I have had it all removed. I guess the only way is to put some sort of small closet there as this is where my neighbours bed is located. The majority of that wall I have a wardrobe and I cannot move it to where the sound comes from as the bedroom doorwill not open.Wish I could upload a pic here.
