Has anyone here washed a sheepskin rug in the washing machine. I know the internet says that you can but I was just wondering what the underside of it would be like afterwards and whether it would distort in some way.

I washed a sheepskin coat once and it got destroyed.
Several people who've actually done it have contributed to this Mumsnet thread:

What about using that Vanish carpet cleaner, that you shake on to it. A bit like, "Shake n Vac?"

Thanks for the replies. I did look at the Youtube video but it looks a bit of a faff. On second thoughts, I think I`ll get it dry cleaned. Thanks again.

£35 at the dry cleaners apparently. The guy asked me how big it was... er, the size of a sheep perhaps?
I've done it. It took ages ( days and days) to dry, but it was fine. No change in texture.
Suggest you use "handwash" cycle and no spin at all.
delicate wash no spin.fine ..have done so lots
Ought not believe everything you read on the Net. I investigated once as it didn't seem possible to me, to find plenty of advice saying one could wash pillows. Take my word for it, it is a bad idea.

Apparently, if you wash a sheepskin rug you have to spend ages combing it out afterwards. I can`t be bothered to do that so I`m happy to spend £35 and I can collect it tomorrow.
I too would not recommend washing sheepskin rugs, coats, pillows, or any other sheepskin item at home. I was reading at https://www.sheepskintown.com/ that you should not attempt cleaning any sheepskin item at home but take it to the cleaners. Not all cleaners will know how to clean it, so make sure you find a cleaner (or a furrier) that knows how to clean all kinds of furs instead.
