how do i know if item is real gold?

I have a piece of jewellery and was wondering how i tell if its real gold.On it,it has Italy 9kt and the initials IBB is this the real thing?

Do you remember when Gerald Ratner sent the shares in his jewellery shops crashing when he described his products as 'crap'? I think you've got one of his products!! Sorry, no offence intended but the '9kt' tells you that it's 9 carat gold which is very impure gold. (Pure gold is 24 carats but it's not suitable for jewellery. 22 carat gold is the 'top quality' gold used for jewellery - if you go to the finest jewellers in Hatton Garden you'll see plenty of this. 18 carat gold is probably more common in jewellery which still has some 'quality' to it. 9 carats? Well think 'Pound Shop', 'BuyRight', etc!!).

If you appreciate the piece of jewellery purely for it's aesthetic quality then wear it and treasure it. If, however, it was a gift from a boyfriend, start thinking 'Cheapskate!'!!
