I have no idea why, but my microwave stinks. Smells like something has crawled into it, died and then decayed slowly. Scrubbed it, used kitchen spray on it, used dettol spray on it, left a tub of bicarb in it and it still smells.

Any ideas?!

microwave a lemon?
is there something dead underneath it?
Try an onion cut in half, sounds counterintuitive but it does work in most instances.

about 5 teaspoons lemon juice in a bowl half filled with water and microwave for 6 minutes. Can also vinegar, but I think lemon smells better.
Boil some vinegar and water in it, then leave it then for a few hours and wipe down.
I put a sliced up lemon in a bowl of water in the micro for 5 mins. Works a treat.
mccfluff has a good point, I called out an engineer for an awful smell from my fridge (built in type) when he dismantled it he found a dead mouse underneath.
This is the best tip - put a jug of cold water with a taste of Fairy Liquid - boil it up until bubbling and and let it go round the micro - it cleans the whole microwave - unbelievable. best tip out. but look out for water going down. your microwave will be like a new one inside. good luck
Stick lemon slices in a jug of water and boil...

Right thank you. I shall try those suggestions one by one. I just do not understand why it pongs so bad.

And no, there isnt anything dead underneath it (although that is a good point because the cats are known to bring in small animals and then lose interest in them).
Jenny "put a jug of cold water with a taste of Fairy Liquid"

How much Fairy Liquid does BM have to taste first?

lol @ummmm

I suppose if I taste washing up liquid, I wont be concerned about the smell anymore, I'll be too busy spitting bubbles........
One time my babysitter, not being able to find the dishwasher tablets, filled it with washing up liquid.

The kids loved it but she had a very busy night :-D
lol ummmm, Ive done that myself many moons ago.
Barmaid I used to repair microwaves. We don't know the make or type but if it is a good sized one it may not have a single membrane moulded cavity. Some of the larger types have a base which is sealed all around the bottom where it meets the sides. When this seal fails, grease and spillages can get under the base and become pretty horrible. We used to have to remove the base and clean the casing under it then put the base back in and re seal it.
She said she put it on and left it...went to make a cup of tea later and was greeted with a kitchen full of bubbles :-)

Well lemon in water has diffused the smell a bit. I'll leave it in there. Then I'll move through the other suggestions.

Togo it is a Kuppersbusch combination job. It does everything bar clean itself!

Now, no comments about BM and her smelly Busch. You know who you are.........
Where's Snags and Randy :-)
It's the ghost of frozen meals past, come to haunt you for your sins to cooking !
Bin it and buy a new one - they're so cheap!
