I have a jacket that needs 'washing' ...it has a Gortex shell - do I
need to 'reproof' it after washing? ....tia

You need to wash it in something like nikwax.

This stuff. Buy as big a pot of each as you can afford as it gets much cheaper as it gets bigger...Use the tech wash and the wash in reproofer, it makes goretex stuff like new
