Alternative To Tiling In Bathroom

My brother wants to try and save money in his bathroom and give a different look to it by instead of using tiles, use tongue & groove that's varnished.

I'm not too sure on this mainly because of how steam can get anywhere so the wood would have to definitely be 100% sealed everywhere.

Just wondering, has anyone done this before please or is it best to just get the tiles?

Wood tongue and groove is labour intensive and a long term maintenance commitment. Tell him to have a look at this solution. ^^

I'd be wary, but there again I have a wooden window sill that's painted and it survives. I suspect you can get plastic T&G now, can't you ?

Aren't most Scandinavian saunas lined with wood in one form or another...doesn't get any steamier than that! Perhaps a little research in that direction?

They look good Togo but how do you cut them?

Rubber type flooring tiles look good, and you can have assorted colours, or just plain.
Also easy to cut around any piping, and glue.

Millie you cut them with a utility or sharp Stanley knife on the finished or front edge and break or snap them. Good support over the full length and a good straight edge as a guide is a must.

Some of the panels are solid Millie(some have a hollow construction). The solid ones can be cut with a fine tooth saw, again good support along the whole cut is required.

Aree tiles particularly expensive then? Basic white tiles seem pretty cheap to me

White tiles can be picked up cheaply. It's whether Zebby's brother is any good at tiling.

Togo's panelling is the way a lot of people are going now.

Timber T&G would be Ok on the walls, but I wouldn't use it in the shower. Good extraction is even more important with timber though.

My brother tongue-and-grooved his bathroom about 10 years ago (apart from round the bath/shower of course, and a splashback for the basin) and it still is looking good.
