How is it possible for a relatively new fridge to smell if there is no iffy food in there ?

Try putting a small container, size of a tuna tin, with bicarbonate of soda in it. Should clear any manufacturing smells in a couple of days.
as above ..and check the drainage hole at the back is clear

I tried that sapel. It's not THAT new. A couple of years. It smells off

then check your drainage !
Do you make sure that everything is properly wrapped/sealed?
Is the fridge running at 3 or 4 degrees C?
Is the drainage hole at the back clear?

Looks like a " look at the drainage hole at the back " operation. Do I have to switch off and pull it out ?
check hole is clear by gently inserting a cotton bud..and pull out to check that the condenser is not clogged up behind the hole...
always better to switch off for a wee bit whilst poking around

Could something have slipped underneath the fridge and is rotting there, Samuraisan?

I don't think so Guiness. I have just emptied it and washed it out with special fridge cleaner. I still can't find the culprit. It is a double door fridge/ freezer, American style. I can't see any draining hole inside to poke about in. Zero. I have put some bicarbonate of some in a little dish and have bought one of those takeaway smelly things. Anymore ideas ?
