Polystyrene sheets on the outside of his house......is he not aware of Grenfell Tower, at all?
Question Author
obviously not, my daughter said the same thing
Polystyrene is highly flammable , he is putting both his house and yours at risk. You need to phone the council planning dept and make a complaint, or possibly a better idea is to talk to the fire brigade and ask advice. They will know the best way to proceed and will do as much as possible to help.
Get on to your local council planning department asap and ask if this is legal.
I'd love to see a picture of this.
Alarmists ... much!

I can't take a picture as he has put tarpulin up as it rained and it is covered. Would he even need planning permission for it I wonder, will find out, thanks
//I'd love to see a picture of this. //

Me too. I'm curious. What's the idea? Is he going to have render put over it or just leave the house wrapped in polystyrene sheets?
I am assuming it is the expanded Polystyrene tiles that you get . That would explain the 'bits blowing everywhere' . They are highly flammable and give off poisonous fumes when burning.
I would think it is a racing certainty that the insulation will be covered in a cement based plaster ... making it almost impossible to set fire to.

Don't compare the Grenfell tower cladding to that of a house.
That is just scare mongering.
What's new?

I only wrote to see if any builder on here can tell how long the owrks are likely to go on for as the little bits of polystyrene (loads of the stuff) is covering my garden like snow and every time I or anyone goes outside we walk it all in the house, it is annoying me so much and would anyone, they are at the stage now where they are rubbing it down. I never compared it to Grenfell tower but even on a site I looked at about it, it compares it with grenfell tower, here is the link I looked at https://www.thegreenage.co.uk/external-wall-insulation-safe/, thanks for all replies
Eddie, polystyrene tiles are now made flame retardant, the main fire hazard being caused when gloss paint is applied to them.

Please feel free to backtrack, equivocate and go off at a tangent as per.
That link (although it doesn't open in the right place) should put your mind at ease.

I'm surprised that they're using polystyrene. It has a poor insulation value compared to other products such as Celotex.

I guess it's the cutting that's resulting in bits flaking all over the place. You wouldn't get that so much with Celotex. (Which is also around two and a half times the insulation value.)

It's just ignorance, Chessington. A little more care in cutting and fixing is all that's needed. I'm guessing that it'll be rendered over. Even so, it shouldn't take as much as six weeks. At least the rendering and painting should be a lot less messy for you.
Fire retardant is a long way from fire proof! They still burn just not quite as easily!

Thanks The builder, guess how he tried to clean it up in my garden? with a blower, I was stunned!! he just made more mess, he did this Monday and must of know more of his crap would come over during the week, I will be having words with him this weekend, and ask him how is he going to clean it up, it is absolutely everywhere, cannot even let my grandkids out to play as when we go out there to put something in the dustbin even, the hoover has to come out as all over my house, blowing in my windows, so they have to be shut too.
Perhaps rather than fall out with your neighbour it would be wiser to have a word with the builders.

The neighbours are the builders, ever since they bought the house a couple of years ago they have gutted it and done loads to it, they are nice people, I did have a word yesterday about the mess and he was very sorry and took a hoover to my patio, he said he did not realise the mess it caused, but I would of thought it caused loads of mess to his own garden, we will have to get a pressure washer on it after though as my patio is concrete with grooves and you cannot hoover it out the grooves, thanks for all replies
It's best to remain on good terms with your neighbours. Be patient. The mess can always be cleared up.
