Hotpoint Washing Machine Wma9 , Drum Not Turning.

Hello all,

I have a washing machine (as above), the motor runs, the belt is still there and not slack, but the machine, will not turn to wash or spin.

Any ideae please, apart from buy a new one, call an engineer, or find a service manual (does not seem to be available for Hotpoints.

Belt has become so stretched and slack it is not turning the drum? I know that this does happen. Needs a new belt.

Remove the belt and try to turn the drum by hand, if it will not turn check for any obstructions, if no obstructions check there is no abnormal movement in bearings.

Sorry, just try turning the drum by hand with the door open. No need to remove the belt. If it does not turn then you need an engineer .

A few weeks ago I was asked to look at a relatives machine with the same fault.
My first thought was to look at the motor brushes .. they were well worn with barely any resistance when pushed back into their housing.
They were £20 from espares .. problem solved.

The motor ran in the machine I recently fixed .. until it was under load ( with wasing in drum).
A motor that runs when it has little resistance and then doesnt when loaded is not getting the voltage it requires due to the poor contact the worn brushes are making with the commutator.

^ good point I have seen that happen. Brushes are easy to change and cheap.

I assume when the poster says the motor runs that he has tested it under load, it's the common sense thing to do.

Yes the belt is not slack and the drum turns when the belt is rotated by hand, and the belt turns when the drum is turned from inside. The motor runs with the machine loaded or unloaded. Meanwhile, I`m trying the link added by Donny 48, and thanks, Donny.

The initial enquiry mentioned .."but the machine, will not turn to wash or spin" .. is a complete contradiction of your latest reply... "The motor runs with the machine loaded or unloaded".
If it runs while loaded .. surely it is washing ?

The motor is running, but the drum is not turning under power. The drum will turn by hand, either by pulling on the belt or by hand turning the drum with the door open.

The link supplied by Donny did not help, as it referred to everything but the drum not turning etc.

Remove the belt and with the motor running bring some pressure to bear on the pulley, I would commonly lean on the pulley with a hammer shaft. If it is easy to stop then it may well be the brushes referred to by Alavahalf.

It could be the motor pulley spinning on the the spindle?

Yes could be but as previously suggested underpowered due to bad brushes.

I am assuming that the machine fills with water when you load it. So if the brushes are not the problem(I don't know whether this has been discounted) it may be the control pcb. It may be worth a visual inspection. Any black flash marks or a break in the board could be serious. Also the sensors that tell the controller that the machine is now full and up to temperature (on a hot wash)and ready to turn could be faulty.
