having the washing machine go awol, i discovered i couldn't think of a way to wash clothes if i didn't have one. There is the laundrette i suppose but that is expensive now and too much faffing about.

The Dishwasher - he's a keeper. He irons and washes my car too.

It's a right pain when washing machine goes wrong. All depends on circumstances, good health etc. When mine has gone wrong in the past, I've washed a few small things in sink, rinsed and squeezed by hand. That's ok on a good drying day. Other than that, my daughter has helped out by using hers. She is only 2 minutes away.
I don't think that I've got many 'appliances' (in the sense that you refer to them). I've not got a washing machine, dishwasher or fridge. (I've got a small freezer though). The only 'appliance' (of the electrical variety) I rely heavily upon is my microwave oven.
However, rather like JD33, I wouldn't want to be without my waiter's friend ;-)

Forget the Dishwasher. If you have ever (like me) had to hand-wash nappies, sheets, towels, duvet covers as well as clothes nothing - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - comes near to the washing machine. Just imagine it ladies (and I mean ladies, we had to do it). Better still, try it for a week. If you haven't got a couple of babies then you are quids in. Go-on, I dare you!
