JJ, first you need to identify if it is the toilet cistern or loft cold water tank giving the problem.

Next time it happens lift the lid on the toilet cistern before you flush, and see if is overfilling.
All covered by the previous answers, but I thought nI should post as you were kind enough to ask for me ;o)

It may be an older type toilet cistern with an overflow. We do need to know if it's the toilet or the roof tank.

Anyway, it's the ballvalve that needs replacing, JJ.

So here I go again. Yes I think it is ball cock/valve in the tank in the loft. Neighbour is going to have a go at it tomorrow.

Thanks all for answering. I would have given it a go myself but too fat and not agile enough and of course don't have the necessary ladders. After my fall today I'll give it a miss LOL
