I have a Worcester-Bosch combi boiler.....six years old and serviced yearly.
For about a year now whenever I have a winter weekend away or a summer holiday I return to the boiler having gone out .....which is easily sorted but a pain when the house is cold.....I leave the thermostat at 17 when I'm away in the winter.....
The pressure is kept up and checked before I leave....

As this never happens when I'm home I am guessing that it may be something to do with hot water not being used rather than the heating which should tick over in winter.....but I'd appreciate any thoughts please....

Niggle, funny name for a boiler.

He'll have an even funnier one if he doesn't start behaving, Sam!
I'm tempted to say 'If one old boiler goes out then why shouldn't the other?'
But I won't.
'Cause I'm a nice fella.

Oh I just knew it'd be you, Shoota!...... ;-)

Keep him there, Minty...x
Afternoon Minty, what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?
I heard there was an armed intruder ! Now you stay on that step and repent !!!
A ruder intruder, that's what I'm inter...
Ok ! Step ! Stay there till you are ready to change your ways ! ;0)
It may be due to a back draught through your flue ;-)

Thank you, Ryzen.....will learn about that....though why would it only do it when I'm away?
There must be something that happens when I'm home that doesn't happen when I'm not?....or vice versa?....cue Shoota ;-).....x
I doubt if the boiler has taken a dislike to you, Gness ... (who could?)

I'll give it some more thought, but I can't immediately think of anything that could go wrong just because you're not there ;o)

I'm sorry to be no help whatsoever, except performing an exorcism on the boiler.
Question Author
Thank you, Builder....'tis a mystery, isn't it..... :-(

I did think I may ask the neighbours to run the hot water for a few minutes each day I'm away......to see if that works.....but if you come up with anything I'll be happy.....and if you want to come with your holy water to perform an exorcism I'll put the kettle on...xxx
Perhaps turn the thermostat up to what you usually have it gness?....
Question Author
Thanks, Patsy.......but that would be a bit hot in the summer.... :-(
Oh, I was only thinking of the winter gness!
Question Author
Nope....every time, Patsy.....summer or winter.....winter's a pain to return to a cold house...x
You need it looked at gness.....
Question Author
I have a contract, Patsy....so it's not a problem.....in fact it's not really a problem at all.....bar the cold house...
But I was so curious about why it only happens when I'm away.....there is so little that's different other than running hot water...x
