When should I have a gardener come and cut my lawn for the first time this year,please?
I live in Brighton, East Sussex about 3 miles from the coast at a height of 750 feet facing south.
Your advice would be much appreciated

We just had ours cut and I have never seen so much in the way of cuttings from one cut. It looks much better. So I would say "as soon a possible"

Ditto. Ours was cut 10 days ago, and weather permitting, will be again next Tuesday. If you leave it to long "clumps" can form, and if it rains heavily on an overgrown lawn it is a devil to get a mower over it. First cut is not the deepest when it comes to lawns. :))

Depends how long your grass is.

A general rule of thumb is don't cut more than 2/3rds of the grass off,

As oz says it depends how long it is. Here in the far SW I mow it all year round.

When your lawn is noticeably longer than you want it to be, I suppose? In our case it’s limited by the fact the council only collects garden rubbish once a month in winter rather than twice the rest of the year.

I haven't had my lawn mowed since last autumn. I expect the gardener will turn up when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Pp, why do you assume arjay's gardener is Spanish or Polish?

If you ask the gardener's advice, can you trust it? He will of course say you need it cut now.
