Could you help me by telling me what this is called.

A metal ring outside dia. same as a £2 coin, inside dia. about 3mm less.
About 4 or 5 mm thick.

I don’t think it’s a washer, as the central hole is very big, plus it’s thick.

If I knew what it was called I could probably find it!

Any chance of us seeing a picture?
If there is a rubber insertion on the inner diameter , then it is Doughty washer/ seal.
Question Author
No picture, as I haven’t got one - it’s something I NEED, and no internal rubber, but it could have one.

I want to use it as a workround spacer on my artificial leg; a £2 coin used to work, but now for all sorts of reasons it has to be a ring, not a disc.
Question Author
Yes, bookbinder, that would probably do - how do
i get or specify the dimensions, which are critical?
As regards specifying the dimensions, a medical expert might be the best person to ask, rather than someone on AnswerBank. We would like very much to help you, but I feel that this is somewhat beyond our capabilities.
Have you got a engineering supplier near you, if so try asking by giving inside and outside diameters and thickness ?
Question Author
No, no engineers around, apart from Screwfix(!)

Hopefully I can ask for a “22mm diameter Dowty washer” (or whatever a £2 coin is) and just use multiples.
If you have a good ironmongers near you, you might get lucky there. Alternatively, have a wander round B&Q.
Question Author
Good ironmongers, no, all gone - first surplanted by Homebase, later Screwfix/Wickes, but the old-fashioned shops where you could take in a washer and ask if they had something similar... do they still exist? Certainly not in suburban London, anyway.

As far as the leg is concerned, it's often more of an engineering than a medical problem, making it longer/shorter/whatever.

Obtain your measurements and then search on-line for spacing washers.
We have a good ironmongers in Reading, Drews the Ironmongers, Caversham Road (Near the station with a small car park at the back). Depending on your desperation you may, or may not, find it worth the trip. They have a website - have a look.
Question Author
Bit of lateral thinking here (probably treasonable).

Is there an easy way of bashing out the MIDDLE (silvery) bit of a £2 coin? The resulting 'ring' would fit my bill precisely!

I have vices, hammers, blowlamps, etc.

hi bainbrig, have you heard of the charity remap? they are a group of ex-engineers who can engineer solutions for disabled people. They have helped me enormously a few times, engineering things to help me look after my newborn, in the form of (for example) a device thtat helped me strap her in the car seat (and undo the straps when needed_ and another device that helped me to undo the high chair because i couldnt press the buttons. If they make something for you it's free, but if they know of something on the market, they ask you to pay for it http://www.remap.org.uk/
That's a fabulous link Bednobs, what a great service.
my hands are typical for someone with RA, all sideways, and i find it mucho difficult to press things and have virtually no power in them. I remember when we were looking for a pram i had a succession of shop assisstants saying "well you JUST need to press this button" (invariably at the same time as twisting something else) I began to hate that word "just"
Exactly, everything is only simple if you can do it.

With my eyes, I get 'It's there!!' as they point waving their arms about lol.

Glad you got assistance to cope.
Question Author
Thanks bednobs, I'll bear that link in mind for the future.

Oh, the £2 coin business - just watching YouTube, and the answer is you just bash it out! (Although heating the outer part would probably help).
