Home Safes - Good Idea Or Not?

After me telling you my friend keeps quite abit of money in a home safe.

But I've been thinking it that really better than hiding it somewhere?
Anyone wanting to steal from you would just take the safe wouldn't they? Isn't it just a red flag to say "here is my money and valuables"?

Suppose they are harder to get into but Argos do them for about £50, so guessing if the thief took them home they wouldn't be too hard to get into with a few tools?

Any thoughts? It's been bugging me for a while now. (Sad I know!)

Hide the safe.

We have one, well actually we have two but one of them is under the floor boards in the wardrobe to unless someone went rummaging they wouldn’t even know it was their.

Depends on the safe and how it is fixed and whether it's alarmed.

We have one. it's in the floor and to remove it you would need a Jack Hammer. It's supposedly fireproof and contains the Deeds to our seven properties. I like the feeling of security it gives.

OH I see, so it's best to hide it, that makes sense.

And even better if you make it extremely hard to remove.

Any professional thieves that want to get into a safe will do so. But most domestic burglaries are not committed by professional thieves. They are committed by opportunist scrotes who grab quickly whatever they can to raise a few quid for their next fix. They would not bother with a well installed sturdy safe.

We've got 2 - his and hers :)
Both are in our built in wardrobes, so not particularly well hidden, but they're securely fastened to the wall with anchor bolts.
There's not much in them (passports, a bit of cash, jewellery, etc), but there's not much chance of anyone carrying them off anytime soon.

They come with the necessary fittings and holes are pre-drilled, so you can either fix the safe to the floor or a wall.

Ours is cemented into the wall, no idea whats in it, we aint got a combination! It looks impressive though. I wont be trying to open it any day soon.

They're a danger to be honest, because if you get intruders and you're in the house and they find your safe, they're going to 'compel' you to open it, so if your not willing to open it, or worse still unable to open it I can't imagine you're going to be having a very nice time.

Our safe is well hidden behind a wardrobe. And will be a very brave guy to confront my 3 hounds.

Have two safes. One fixed and hidden to keep your valuables in, and one with a couple of notes and a cheap watch to give up if you're threatened.

On a slight tangent, while I was working in a Prison,I talked to a man who had done over 250 house burglaries. I asked him what made him choose which houses to rob. He said ''Robbers always go for the ones with a Burglar alarm, they know that they will have stuff worth taking''
An alarm is like an advert,telling a potential burglar that the house is worth robbing.

EDDIE - re Burgular alarms, I don't think that's always necessarily true. Most people want to protect themselves from the intrusion of strangers invading their sanctuary more than possessions. I know I do.

Do burglars ever venture into lofts? Probably safer than a safe!
