Tv Licensing Laws?

Hello,

I haven't had a TV license for about the past four years as my means of entertainment has been by watching Netflix through my Wii U console, as I am going to be soon without the Wii U I am therefore looking into alternative devices in which to view Netflix and Amazon Prime. Now as an Amazon Prime member I am keen to buy a Firestick, however before I do I am wondering if it comes with any 'Live TV' Channels downloaded onto the device which I would be unable to remove and therefore requiring that I need a TV license.

legally if you have a tv, your supposed to, as you might watch the bbc ermm really, legalised enetertainment extortion, why it still exists bewilders me, with such diverse channels of media excluding the bbc.

You need a licence regardless of whether you watch NBC programmes or not. The licence is a licence to watch any tv program live or in catch up.

Hi, thanks for your answers so far, but no I currently do not need a TV license, I can assure you that I am not breaking any laws by simply owning a TV. There is no aerial attached, nor any set-top box, nor any freeview etc. I also copied this from the TV License Website....

You need to be covered by a TV Licence to

watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service
download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer.

It doesn’t matter what is available on the fire stick. If you don’t watch live tv or catch up on BBC iPlayer then you don’t need a licence.
I was replying to the idea that tv licences are only for watching BBC

As Murraymints states, you need a TV licence to 'install' any device which is capable of receiving TV broadcasts, irrespective of whether you actually use that facility or not.

As an analogy, in the days of VHS video recorders, some people who only had black-&-white TV sets went out and bought video recorders. As soon as they did so, they had to buy colour TV licences (even though they could actually only watch programmes in black-&-white) because their video recorders had tuners inside them which were capable of receiving colour broadcasts. (i.e. they were deemed to have 'installed' equipment capable of receiving colour TV transmissions, even though it was impossible for them to view programmes in colour).

So if you buy a TV set and connect it to the mains you're deemed to have 'installed' broadcast receiving equipment, irrespective of whether you use it solely as a means of viewing Firestick content (or, for example, solely as a computer monitor).
