Nuclear shelter

Should anyone one be lucky enough, to have a fall out shelter should a nuclear bomb be dropped how long would they have to stay in the shelter before it's safe to come out?

Post this in science too. Lots of thing to consider, including size of bomb, distance from explosion etc.

Judging by the half-lives of the sort of things they make the bombs out of, several millenia!

I think the question is... would you want to survive it and face the mass destruction that's been left? assuming you could survive the atmosphere after such an event!
