Protecting Granite

Well the kitchen fitters are coming to put in the new granite kitchen countertops on Friday.

When my cousin called last night - she said that the granite would be easily chipped etc. I only told her last night.

Anyway I know that can happen so would there be anything to "protect" the granite.

You'd have to whack it with something fairly heavy to chip Granite so no, there's no protection as it would have to be harder than the Granite.

oh thanks Zacs - that's great news - cos I started to worry a little.

I have gone for white with a sparkle so could you tell me if it would stain too.

Also they have been expensive - should I expect a guarantee - if so what kind of a guarantee.

It's not what you do to the granite it's what you do with everything else. Don't drop anything heavy on it, use silicon mats or worktop savers. It's not that fragile though and small chips can be sanded out and re polished.

There is no guarantee Jenny. Depending on the thickness of your worktop, just don't go slamming down pots and pans.

Ask the installers about sealing the tops.Without sealing they will soon stain.

If it stains which is very unlikely pearl drops tooth polish works wonders

Red wine or beetroot juice makes an interesting contrast on light granite :-)

I'd be buying a dozen silicone mats to prevent damage and staining....do you have a Poundland handy - that's where I got my supply!

I will try and be careful as I'm so glad to get rid of the black.

Friend called today - she too put black countertops a couple of years ago and she hates them too. Too hard to keep clean.

I live pretty much next door to all supermarkets. I have one tiny silicon mat and 2 glass countertop savers. But will look at poundland.

don't drink red wine nor beetroot - so should be ok with staining altho tea can stain. Am also replacing the stainless steel sink with a white "blanco/bianco" sink

Is it actually Granite, or a man made alternative? Not sure there are natural Granites in white with sparkles.

Does 'Silostone' appear on the paperwork?

And if it's polished, with a sheen, then stains should be impenetrable.

If it is a synthetic it should be tougher and resist staining better

well - it is Silestone by Cortesino - the original quartz. That's what it says on the warranty.
