A few weeks ago I had an email from my energy provider saying sorry your leaving which I knew nothing about and rung immediately as I didn’t want to change and I had no idea why I had received the email or which supplier I was apparently moving to. I was told not to worry as some suppliers try to take customers but as I’d rung nothing further would happen. However I have just checked my emails and I have received my final statement showing my bill up to 11th September. I can only assume I DID move suppliers on 12th but I don’t know who is supplying my electricity, at what cost or how how I’m paying for it! I certainly won’t sleep now! What can I do?

It took us a long time to get back but got there in the end. We were switched to British Gas when we were with Eon. We found out in the end that there was a mix up in the post code. Eon couldn't deal with us as they said we were now with British Gas and they said they had done nothing wrong. It did take around 8 months to sort and in the end Eon gave us around £80 which was what was on the account when it was switched as a gesture of good will.
As Theshedman indicates, the problem can arise from someone simply typing in an incorrect postcode or house number.
However it's also been known to occur when someone who receives commission from persuading householders to change their supplier (either by calling door to door or by telesales calls) decides to increase their income by pretending that they've been successful in getting someone to switch (even tough they've never actually contacted that person).

This happened to a friend of ours. They got a letter in the post saying welcome to new supplier when they hadn't changed. Phoned them up and said about it and company said they had the form with their name,date and signature on it. Friend asked them to send a copy of it to him after he asked for the date it was signed. When he told them he was not even in the country at this time and the signature had been forged they changed him back straight away.
