Thinking Of Not Having A New Cooker

My current one has died and I am seriously considering not replacing it with another one. Just getting a mini one that sits on the work top. I would gain a chunk of extra space, and have room for a dishwasher which I would use more often. I mostly use my slow cookers and microwave and living alone using a big oven seems inefficient. I love cooking but a small oven would still mean I could bake a bit.
Some friends think I am crazy, some think it's a great idea, one is going to do it himself when his cooker needs replacing.
I can't see me holding any dinner parties in the future.

Your opinions please.

i couldn't do without my oven, when the hob went i was in a total panic, then we lost the gas supply, so it meant using these electric hotplates which was really awkward.
i have had mine for over 30 years and its rarely gone wrong.

I have this and it is as powerful as any other hob and will heat my very large pressure cooker no problem. It is lightweight and lives in a drawer when not being used.

Or you could get a full size hob installed where your cooker is now, with the dishwasher underneath. Like this one

My oven went u/s years ago and I have never replaced it - I manage with a halogen oven, microwave, and a double hob; all free-standing on the worktop.

If you are happy with a microwave why don't you buy a Combination one? You could replace your present microwave and have some extra space where your old cooker stood.

I'm in a similar position. My oven and grill died a few years ago, and I've only had need for the hob. Otherwise I use the slow cooker or halogen (less frequently).
The induction hob posted by hc looks like what I'd need...I've even checked my pans to see if they are compatible;).

I love my little hob, pasta, in the summer I even use it in the garden occasionally, it plugs in to an ordinary socket. (We love 'proper' chips cooked in a pan now and again but hate stinking the house out so cook them outside) It is as good as the induction hob on my full size cooker, so heats up very quickly.

I suppose it's a bit like baths, not so many people use them but it might count against you if you want to resell.

My oven where I work has just died too. I found it tough to decide what to cook for the staff without an oven. It's doable of course. Years ago I managed perfectly well with a Baby Belling when I was only cooking for myself.

My cooker isn't built in so I'd take it with me if I moved. I took my bath out years ago but the plumbing is still there, under the floorboards, wouldn't cost a lot to put a bath back in if I wanted to.

I believe a home is for living in and should be fitted out to suit me. I've reduced the number of bedrooms by removing a stud wall but any future buyer can easily replace it.

Think I'd rather a cooker than a dishwasher to be honest, you're on your own so there cant be much washng up.

But thats just me.

I agree, a dish washer is not that good when you are on your own. You will be running it almost empty or leaving pots and pans in for days until you fill it up. I personally would go for a mini oven and a separate hob.
