Cleaning Banisters

Please - what is the best way to clean wooden ( stained or varnished) banisters ? They are dark brown but over time the top has got a build up where people's hands have been.

White spirit.

I use Flash liquid on a cloth then a damp cloth to remove the residue.
Finish with kitchen towel to dry.

Use your solvent/detergent of choice with a kitchen scrub fabric, such as those green jumble things as you usually find attached to foam sponge sections. Have a wet cloth handy to catch drips and wipe off afterward.

I just use hot soapy water.
