I am looking for a gas only supplier (domestic) who charges the lowest standing charge. At the moment we are paying 25.25p per day and consuming no gas - hence the standing charge rules the decisions.

I have not found a convenient way to identify the lowest charging supplier. Can anyone help in the search and maybe point out the lowest rate or at least something significantly lower. It is important that this must be a gas only supplier (not dual fuel by requirement in the tariff terms).

Will you occasionally need to use gas?
If you will use some occasionally can't you just go on a comparison site and select gas only and put in a nominal low figure for usage and then see what the best deal is?

No gas usage now or planned, ever - but don't want the meter removed in case of change of circumstances, including sale of the property.
Check out Money Saving Expert Cheap Energy Club which has two companies with zero standing charges but charge extra for any fuel that you do use. Might be of use to you.
Don't the comparison sites help ?
(If it's just the standing charge it's minimal anyway.)
Have you asked gas company to simply stop your supply? They, or another company will easily reinstate the supply. Go to my compare to check prices for best deal.

The zero standing charge companies are either dual fuel only on that tariff scenario (and smart meter too) or a minimum annual bill which in fact is higher than the standing charge alone with no consumption. Stopping supply is equal to removing the meter which is not what we want. The standing charge is minimal if it is very low, we are paying at an annual rate of 92 quid plus, until the end of November we were paying exactly zero. Is there a comparison site for comparing only gas standing charges ? If there is one then I have not found it.

Does anyone have something (standing charge) lower than what we are paying to suggest ? We would happily transfer to a supplier with a really low gas only service, regardless of the usage/consumption rate.
UK Power states that Ebico, Eon, NPower and Utilita all offer zero tariff gas supply. Maybe have a look at them.
We have been with Avro Energy for the past two years and they charge 17.85p per day for gas.
Do you have a current gas supplier? If so what would happen if you just cancelled now or at renewal date. And then just don't take out a gas contract with anyone else.
What about changing to bottled gas?
Check out Octopus rates.
>Stopping supply is equal to removing the meter which is not what we want.
Have you been told that the meter would be removed?

We are currently with ebico - they charge a minimum annual bill of £104 - more than we are paying (temporarily) on their "standard" rate.

Aha, Avro Energy - lower standing charge but they look as if they have no option of taking gas only, am I correct ?
Question Author
Why would I want bottled gas if I don't want to use any gas ? I have been told by the current supplier that the two options are to pay for the meter (standing charge) or have it removed (by anyone, could change suppliers and reduce removal cost - don't want the meter removed). As said earlier, sites list no standing charge suppliers but these (so far as I have ascertained) either insist on dual fuel contracts or charge a minimum annual bill regardless (even at zero consumption) - no gas only with zero standing charge and no minimum annual bill amount. The consistent indication is that you cannot have a meter but no official supplier. Octopus do not supply gas only.
Would bottled gas not give you the option to maintain a "supply" - and gice the option of using it as and wher, or not, as the case may be?

We have no mains gas here, neighbours have bottled gas.
Karl my only suggestion is, have a word with Ofgem and see if they can help you. At the very least I would think they could tell you if you are wasting your time.

We have gas with a 'key' meter . If we want Gas we take the key to the shop who put the required amount on the key , once you pay them. Then you put the key into your meter and it transfers the 'key credit' onto your meter . Works well !
I had this problem many years ago. I never use gas. The Gas people agreed to come and put a lock on the meter. That stayed until I had a gas leak in my drive in the late nineties. They fixed the leak and removed the meter as I never used gas. I stopped paying a gas standing charge after 3 years, when I decided I would never use it.
Never had an issue with them. No charge for the Gas leak very good service. That over 30 years, must have saved a lot of charges.
