I'm moving into a flat and want to carpet it inexpensively since I don't think I'll be there long.

What's my best option? And what would you advise for the kitchen and bathroom areas apart from bog standard lino?

Cheers

Don't know where you live, but if in UK, most towns have a discount carpet store where you can get lengths of foam back carpet pretty cheaply - this doesn't need underlay or grippers. (I did three rooms in left over cinema carpeting for about 40) Or have you considered rush-matting, try googling for suppliers. As for kitchen/b.room, B&Q, Wickes, Homebase etc do a wide range of cushion-type flooring at reasonable prices. Or you could just go minimalistic, leave floors bare and buy a nice pair of walking boots from Cotton Traders!!

There's usually an advert in Exchange & Mart for ex-exhibition carpet that you can carpet a whole house for a very low amount.

We carpetted two bedrooms with left over rolls. You can find them in most shops, they are just end of rolls. We got a very good quality carpet because it was the end of the roll and it was big enough for a medium sized bedroom. They are usually standing up in the shop and are already priced and measured. You need to look around for shops that do it. We carpetted two bedrooms for 100. The carpet had a slight mark so he was doing it even cheaper but that was soon removed by carpet mousse.

For the kitchen & bathroom you could try laminate if you don't like lino or there are some nice floor tiles to be found.
