just had a solid oak floor laid about 6 months ago and currently use a soft brush to clean it however i would like to give it a wash. Scared to just use a mop in case it hurts it and don't know what i should clean it with - any tips?

If the floor has been sealed you really can't hurt it by mopping it. If it hasn't, I would wonder why. Best of luck!
I used to wash my solid oak floor down all the time, as a previous poster has said, it should be varnished/sealed so it protects the water from soaking in to the wood.
you can buy wood cleaner from the supermarket ..its in bottles by the floor cleaning stuff and polishes..
