my side gate is wooden and good, however people in my household kee forgetting to shut it properly. is there a device you can buy that emits a loud noise if the contacts arent together?

It wouldn't be particularly difficult to rig up such a device but
(a) you'd need to consider how it would be powered (mains? battery?) ; and
(b) Arrods' suggestion is far simpler!

Bear in mind that, if you do set it up as you asked, the loud noise will be emitted every time someone opens the gate; the neighbours might not be happy.

The gate only usually gets opened once or twice a week, but is a disaster waiting to happen if it's not closed properly. The problem with a gate shutter is that the gate is wider than it is long, and is also on a slope and also very heavy, and also needs a good slam to get it to line up with the other gate - i don't think a spring will be up to the job
