Ceramic heaters can warm areas quite quickly (especially if you choose one with a fan, although the noise from a fan is irritating to some people). My own heating preference is to use an oil-filled radiator, with the ones from Clarke being particularly reliable in my opinion (and, indeed, in the opinions of several other ABers who've praised them). They don't heat the air as quickly as ceramic heaters but they're very efficient:

(Oil-free radiators are said to be even more efficient but they cost a lot more to start with).
