Calling all decorators and DIYers! OH seems to think that the modern way to decorate skirting boards is to paint them the SAME COLOUR as the walls
I’m unsure.
Have you heard of this? Seen it? Done it yourself?
If so are they to be done in gloss/satin/ emulsion?
Thank you in advance.

It is becoming a 'thing' but yes it would still need to be a more hardwearing paint than emulsion such as gloss or eggshell.

Depends on your rooms. Low ceilings benefit from same coloured skirting boards, and you can buy wood paint the same colour as the walls. Tts usually an eggshell or satin water based paint. Rooms with high ceilings, in my opinion, can take a large skirting board -but not in white -go for an off white . 'Timeless' by Dulux works with lots of colours .
Touché !
You can't put emulsion on wood. Buy a water based paint suitable for wood or metal.
Not something i've noticed. While i have just finished a job papering then painting a living room and kitchen in white silk emulsion and white woodwork, it is more often the case that the woodwork would be a different colour to the walls. People just love contrast.
As for what paint to use? That depends on what sort of finish you require. Satin gives a 'sheen' rather than a shine, gloss does what it says on the tin and you should never use emulsion on woodwork.
I did it.
Painted my smallish bedroom a dark teal...inclding skirting boards and radiator. Used the same emulsion with a water based decorators varnish over for skirting. Yes, I know that may not be hard wearing, but I'm not in the habit of kicking the skirting in my bedroom. In more used areas I'd use a more suitable paint ;)
A rather cheapskate landlord had me paint all the woodwork in a house with white matt emulsion a few years back. Not something i'd recommend but he who pays the piper..........................
As an aside - I would like to have nicer skirting boards but don't want the hassle of ripping out & re-fitting. Is there a product that will fit over the existing boards (which are quite small - 3 in x 0.5 in) ?
Shaking my head here, Dave. If there is anything like that on the market, i've never seen it.
There are covers but unsure if they'd suit your requirements.

yes thanks - they look ideal. I will measure up & do a costing. Might just try one room to start with.
Have a look round before committing, there are other companies doing them.
They do the covers on eBay, might be cheaper.
Modern? Some of ours have been like this for years .
We've lived in our house for 45 years and have always had the skirting boards the same colour as the walls!
Have to say I’ve never heard of it. Hmmmmmm……………
Would love to know just how snugly these covers fit to the wall and how big the gaps are. Perfectly flat walls are a rarity in my experience and any gaps will have to be filled then carefully painted. Very carefully painted.
mine are painted magnolia, with the walls being completely different colours, its worked well up till now
