I'm having a small building job done and I offered to pay cash to avoid the VAT. I'm I illegal or would the builder be illegal if he accepted it?

Why do you ask?
Naomi (if you are the one who asked the qeustion of me on the last post) it's a good idea to indicate who you are talking to.
You seemed to be saying that you didn't mind potentially helping someone to behave badly, so long as you weren't in the frame.
Atheist, that’s some imagination you have there. I should give it a good scouring if I were you. It’s pretty grimey. I said nothing of the sort.
Naomi; you said you'd pay cash without caring if the firm was honest or not. You therefore didn't mind if they paid VAT or not. Not very socially responsible in my view. (Ask no questions, hear no lies).
Atheist, what I actually said was the way people run their businesses is nothing to do with me - and it isn’t.

I trust next time your window cleaner calls you’re going to question him in his methods and demand to see his VAT receipts before you allow his ladder and bucket anywhere near your premises. Course you are! Get real for goodness sake!
You may be surprised to discover, Naomi, that some people would rather support businesses that share their values and such people do care how businesses do business ... but you may recognise words like sweatshop, sustainable, ethical, circular economy, B Corp, green, community, etc etc
Ellipsis, very commendable but how do you know your window cleaner is paying VAT? Do you give him the third degree?

Thanks for stating what the answer that was removed was.

If we don't pay into the govt's tax systems how can we expect there to be any money to pay for Police, NHS, education and the military.

TTT- this makes you seem very anti British. I may not agree with all the laws and taxes but I am obliged to follow the law.

Naomi, she gives me a receipt that itemises the VAT.
Good to know she’s earning so well from window cleaning, ellipsis.
Naomi. I don't have a window cleaner.
Atheist, In that case perhaps you should revisit The Builder’s post on the first page where he confirms that the payment of VAT is not the business of the customer.
I did see Builder's post. If you don't care about certain things, then you don't. I can't make you care. We have different views and that's that.
Atheist, will you please stop putting words in my mouth and get a grip in your overactive imagination. It’s getting the better of you again.

:-)
You know what ‘they’ say about imitation. Careful …. ;o)

Thanks for your answers, I should have been clearer, I didn't say in so many words that I was offering cash to avoid VAT I indirectly suggested it by saying, something like "how much for cash? I don't need a receipt" - but I think technically it is a conspiracy to avoid VAT. Thanks.
