Is there such an organisation as the National Trade Register (NTR)? An organistaion that builders, electricians etc can register with? And is there a website that you can use to verify a company's registration?

The Federation of Master Builders has a website where you can check to see if a tradesman is actually a member.

The gov are trying to set one up www.trustmark.org.uk but the member list isn't up and running yet.

Some Trading Standards services have something like a Quality Builder Scheme and have lists of approved members. Otherwise, try places like the FMB for registered members.

CORGI for registered gas installers corgi-gas.com or 01256372300 they will tell you if someone is registered or not Very important.

Plumbers plumbers.org.uk
Electrical installation niceic.org.uk
Decorators paintingdecoratingassociation.co.uk
Glass workers ggf.org uk this may have been overtaken by FENSA
I apologise if any is out of date I only have an oldish list.

Word of mouth is often the best, but even then check with CORGI for any gas work.

My husband is a joiner and was once told he must join this new nationwide registration scheme, when asked how and when his work would be checked I was told another builder in the area would vouch for him! This scheme never seemed to get off the ground.

Meant to add to the above, apart from CORGI not tried any of these organisations.
The National Trade Register web site is www.tntr.com or www.thenationaltraderegister.co.uk
