exactly that sort of thing, but where to buy in an actual shop i wonder?
Amazon has "Throw over gate latch". We had what you mean, I think but ours were made with the gates
You could try farm supply or stable supply shops
Screwfix might be a good place or B&Q
Don't you know anyone who works with metals and who could make you one if you gave them the measurements?
"exactly that sort of thing, but where to buy in an actual shop i wonder? " - why on earth would you want to do that?

For Funks Sake use a bit of baler twine until you manage to get to farm supply store.

Why so agressive LJ? i cant i dont have any "uppy" bits to twine together. It's to keep an active collie in, while still allowing someone with limited power in their arms/hands to get the gate open and be able to independently go out/leave the house. It's usually bolted, but said person is no longer able to draw or close the bolt with ease
Bednobs; surely a loop of string is enough to fox a dog, but leave a human being able to manage it? Our 95-year-old lady neighbour in France had such an arrangement and she coped OK.
OK, so it's a bit late now for today but Tool Station have branches all over the country:

Why is this in chatterbank?.
bednobs; a string or cord loop would be easier to manage than a metal drop-over. If the gates are a bit out of line, then a metal thing might be a bit hard to budge.

cause i didnt know where else to put it, and unlike some, my life, thoughts and opinions aren't really suitable for the "news" topic.
I dont understand where anyone is suggesting i tie the string!
