We have a 14 ft tall x 3 ft wide fir tree in our back garden and want to get rid of it ASAP, do we need planning permission?

Assuming it is your house and land and tree, probably not. Planning permission varies a hell of a lot between authorities, so its best to give them a ring at your local council office for advice. Make them work, its what you pay you council tax for!!

I can assure you tartanwizard that if this tree was in your garden, bearing in mind there is no rhyme or reason to the positioning of the tree, it looks completely out of place seeing as how we have a small garden, despite being a beautiful tree! Thanks for your environmental facts
I know that deeds for properties in some areas have covenants regarding the planting of trees - they may also apply to the removal of healthy trees, check your legal paperwork from your house purchase (I assume you own - if not then it might be wise to also ask your landlord as a courtesy). As mentioned, discuss it with council and neighbours - in case there is a militant tree hugger in your neighbourhood.
No offence to Tartanwizard with the militant tree-hugger note. Just mean you don't want a neighbours-from-hell type dispute on your hands
If you're in a tree consevation area you need council permission and, unless it's dangerous, they may require you to replace it with a younger/smaller growing one
