I'd use them where the light is rarely used and for short periods only. Otherwise dump them
Some might want them, but they are expensive to run. People like Clarkson used to regard their demise as outrageous, because modern ones are slow to light up to full brightness. They could be used by you (not recommended, for economy reasons), could be sold by you (if you could find any oddbods who's think it worthwhile) or could be recycled (many big shops who actually sell bulbs will accept them).
^ The CFLs were a bit slow to light up, but the even-more-modern ones (ie LEDs) are instantaneous.
I would use them in the loo, which I like to keep lit through the night.
LED's are great - but dumping old filament & CFLs does seem a waste if they still work. I use mostly low-level energy-efficient lighting now.
cloverjo...more sensible to use an LED if leaving on all night (uses about a seventh of the power for the same light output as an incandescent).
If you REALLY think how much light you actually need it turns out I need very little (and blind people need none at all!). Kitchen & bathroom - only when I'm in there at night. Lounge - the TV provides light. Study - laptop & a small desk light. Bedroom - a bedside LED tube for a few minutes when turning in.
Use them up. Perhaps where you may have a night light, which will use them up quicker. If you just toss them, you're wasting the resources/energy (pollution) that was used to make them and they will end up in the landfill whether you use them or not.
davebro, some of us prefer to read printed books, newspapers and magazines.
I have very poor vision in low light and the eye strain would cause bad headaches if I lit my home the way you do
If they work, why waste them ? Power saving is fairly minimal anyway.
