Before then... price cap went up over 50% in April 2022 but wholesale energy price's went up and some co's went bust before then

Earlier...I was lucky enough to get a 2-year fixed deal in October 2021...just before prices started to rise steeply. Still paying less than half of most peoples' tariff.

Here’s some figures that will make your eyes water:

Sticking purely to the unit price, In October 2020 I signed up to a fixed rate deal that saw my gas price reduce by 20% and my electricity price rise by 6%. Just under a year later I had signed up to another deal which would have seen my prices rise by 45% and 36% respectively from October 2021. However, before this began, my supplier went skint due to unmanageable rises in wholesale energy prices, and I was transferred to another supplier, with additional gas/leccy price increases (over and above those I had agreed to) of 18% and 8%. In April 2022 these prices were increased by 82% and 38%. In October 2022 they were again increased by 40% and 20% (*but see below).

*In October 2022 the government introduced the “Energy Price Guarantee” (EPG) which capped energy prices. Without this, my unit prices in October 2022 would have increased by 91% and 72%.

Between October 2019 and now my energy unit prices have increased by 248% (Gas) and 261% (Electricity). In January 2023 my supplier increased prices again, but the ERG kept consumer’s prices the same. Without the ERG between October 2019 and January 2023 my gas unit price would have increased by 450% and my electricity unit price by 383%.

It is eye watering, NJ, and I'm thankful that we can afford these price hikes, albeit resentfully.
