Would An Electric Over For In This Socket Or Would It Need Rewiring ?

Never had an electric oven (always had gas) but planning on getting one.

In terms of fitting I am wondering what would I need to do. Would the oven work with this socket (it is 40 years old) or would it need rewiring?

The cooker switch / socket outlet in your picture (if installed correctly) will be able to run a standard electric oven and hob. I guess that yourr existing oven is free standing in a 600mm gap. If you pull out your oven, You should find a cooker outlet plate (looks like a blanking plate) This is where the new oven is wired into via 6mm twin and earth cable (Electrician is recommended for this install as it needs hard wiring in and testing) the 3 pin socket outlet on the switch in your picture is only for an additional worktop appliance to be plugged into (Not for the connection of an electric cooker)

To add to Klaz's post, there will be a special fuse/breaker in your main fusebox for that outlet which will give you the current rating of the cooker connection.

Indeed Bhg. It will be a B32 MCB (if installed correctly as stated earlier) As I've said. You really need an electrician to install your new appliance as it will require an inspection and test of the circuit as it is fixed wiring. This checks for earth loop impedance and insulation resistance to comply with current laws. So I would advise that you ask for a quote for installation and a primary check to see that the circuit is in fact installed correctly with 6mm cable via a B32 MCB and residual current protection (RCD or RCBO) I am pretty sure it will be if the circuit has never been messed about with by an unquallified person.
