Garden Umbrella Base
3 Answers
I'm looking at garden furniture sets with a table and umbrella. A lot of them don't come with a base for the umbrella. Do I need a base if it slots through the table? Would I have to buy the base separately?

It is wise to have one as the holes in the middle of the table may be larger then the thickness of the umbrella postand the parasol won’t stand straight. Should it become a little gusty a stand should anchor the parasol down and prevent a Mary Poppins occurrence.
You will more than likely need a base, as it will not stand up straight unsupported at the base - I've had personal experience of this :)
You can buy a plastic one that lets you fill it with water for £7

Or you can buy a more substantial metal one for £28

Obviously lots of other places sell them, such as B & Q, The Range etc .... I just chose B & M's at random :)

The plastic fillable bases work well but it's best to first fill with sharp sand and then add water, giving a much heavier result. Most holes for parasols are about 2 inches in diameter and the parasol poles are 1.5 inches. If you look on ebay you will find 'cone wedges' which let the pole fit snugly in the table. Tiltable parasols need a much heavier base - I speak from experience!
