In our house we have warm air heating (which is heated by gas). My question is, is it more cost effective to leave the heating on all day on a low temperature or just turn it on when we get in from work?

When it comes to keeping warm, i think you have to put your own health first and worry about the bills later, but in the UK, "Economy 7" is said to be the most economic..

The simplest and best way is to time it so that it comes on half an hour or so before you get home, goes off when you go to bed, comes on half an hour or so before you get up and goes off half an hour before you leave for work. Set the temperature for normal use 20 - 21C. Override the timeswitch during the day at weekends if required. No timeswitch? You should have one.

Are you in the UK logman?
It is more cost effective to put it on when you come home and as it is warm air heating it will not take long to get the temperature up to comfort level anyway.
That said I would go with stanleymans suggestion to set it to come on before you get home, I hate to walk into a cold house.
The only folks that I know who say Economy 7 is the most economic are the chaps flogging it.
Didn't know you could get economy 7 gas........
