I have a double sink with an adjacent dishwasher sharing a single outlet. Is there a recognized for how the sink and dishwasher outlet pipes mate. 

A diagram would be great.

I know nothing aout plumbing but Google suggests that the two outlets are simply linked by a common trap, such as this one:

The item in Chris' screwfix link is the sort of thing we have had in our last couple of houses. Had no problems with it in all that time (30+ years!).

The outgoing water gurgles sometimes and I'm guessing it's to do with the 'sequencing' of the pipes.

Yes, that's a common problem with linked traps.  To help alleviate this, make sure they are 'anti-vac' traps. (Also known as 'anti-syphon.')
