I have bifold doors which I love to open in the summer. The bug bear is flies. Loads of them come into the house. Is there any tried and tested way of stopping them?

I don't want to not be able to open the doors. Do those blue light things work?

Ha, I hope so Rocky as we've just bought one to hang from our newly erected pergola, OH is a midge magnet. Our local bakery had one in the shop when I was a child so I imagine they must do something.

I made my own fly killer last week as I found they have taken "ooomph" out of bought killer.

Once I hit the fly - drops to the floor - brilliant.  I have two one for upstairs and downstairs.

When I was in UK we used the flower stickers on the windows. They worked well. Also the beaded hangers you put in the doorway

Thanks all. Vagus, let me know how you get on.

JJ - I really don't want to be running around with a fly swat.

Cal - I've seen this, but when the doors open they are only a door width wide so they'd probably be useless, and I don't really like the look of them.

For the last umpteen years, i have had one of those magnetic fly-screens across the back door. Recently had a new door fitted and have just ordered a new fly-screen from Amazon. They do the job very well indeed and it's a rarity when one of the pests get through into the house.

We looked into those too calmck and Rocky, for our back door, which is into the utility room where the dogs crate is. We had a fair few bees fly in and a couple, which we didn't notice, were in there overnight.

Im afraid I don't like them either, I looked into various ones..plastic streamers, croched ones, chain link, but decided I really couldn't be done with them.

We also looked at those magnetic fly screens so the dog can walk/shove through them but decided against them too.

in the end we've done nothing on the back door apart from being vigilant 😕

You need a curtain. Available on Amazon and at other places.

Blue light electronic electrocution kit does work, but since flies can explode, keep well away from food areas. Slso you need to clean out the tray, and replace the light bar/bulb every now & again. Sticky pad fly catchers are good.

Alternatively put a large pile of guano at the bottom of the garden and they'll go there instead.

I've got a magnetic screen on the back door, that works a treat, however, the gap of my bifold doors is approx 7m. A screen will be unsightly in the extreme.

I love my blue zapper. So satisfying when a big fat one fries.

Cuold you bear a net/voile curtain, Rocky?

Thanks, BM. I think I might try the zapper thing.

Tilly, 7 metres would be too much, I think. Plus, Mr RR definitely won't let me drill any holes for poles.

Can you get those electric tennis rackets in the UK?

They zap flies instantly!

Piggynose: "electric tennis racket"

What is that, and would it hurt my cat if she were to touch it?

Incidentally, I find it's easier to swat a fly by using a teatowel rather than a newspaper.

Flies are sensitive to pressure increases so feel the approach of a swat; tennis raquets don't create the same pressure wave as they have holes in them and you wave them in the air not up to a surface. Camping/caravan shops used to stock them.

Amazon have them
