We current have laminate flooring but we're getting a carpet - will we have to take up the laminate flooring or can a carpet be laid on top?

Thanks

There's no reason, in principle, why a carpet can't be laid on top of laminate flooring. (Depending upon the location, the laminate flooring might actually help with heat-insulation or sound-proofing - in the same way that underlay does).

The only practical problem which might arise is with the clearance underneath any doors which open onto the area where the carpet is to be laid. The combination of the thickness of the laminate flooring, plus that of the carpet, might cause doors to stick. You might have to shave a few millimetres off the bottom of some doors but this will probably be far simpler than trying to lift securely-bonded laminate flooring!

i would definately take up the laminate flooring, and then lay the carpet, beacause as well as having the hassle of shaving the bottoms off doors etc. laminate flooring is laid as a "FLOATING FLOOR" in that it is not fixed to the existing floor and is therefore free to expand and retract at will, and you would have to fit your carpet grippers on top of this, which would then also move with the floor, which could cause major problems.

much safer to take up the floor first.
