Have You Got Led Strip Lights?

I know nothing about them.

Are they bright enough to read by if I edge them round my ceiling?

How are they powered? Plug in, hard wired etc

Are they easy to install?

I have a central light fitting and wall lights but need more light at times

I have some Philips Hue strip lights. They are quite bright but they are designed to be concealed (ie indirect light) so it depends how concealed they are as to whether it will be bright enough to read. I would guess yes. 

As to your other questions, Philips Hue strip lights are plugged in and quite easy to install, but a bit fiddly if you want a lot of it. If you want two metres, it's very easy.

We have spotlights in the ceiling, more environmentally friendly  and efficient than strip lights

Margo, I'd love spot lights but it would be a big upheaval - for various reasons it would not be easy to install them in my living room.

barry; I would say that they would be useless for reading, simply making a pretty 'atmospheric' effect round the edge of the ceiling. My only experience is when my son had them installed, incorporated into a coving, so they didn't shine directly down at you. If they were left naked they would be brighter, but probably rather dazzling and irritating.

I think they would be hard wired, but could, presumably be plugged in to a socket, but then there would have to be a transformer-type thingie and the whole thing gets a bit complicated. I did fit a few metres into a wardrobe where they could be tucked up behind the door frame and plugged into a convenient socket within the wardrobe unit, but they only serve to illuminate the clothes (Mrs A's) hanging up there.

I hope the Builder turns up - he would no doubt give you fuller advice.

Mine is behind the coving. It was quite involved, part of a refurbishment. To do it afterwards, running it along the coving, it would be visible, a bit glaring and the power lead would be trailing and also visible. But it would definitely be bright enough to read. Function very much over form.

No point in lighting up the whole room, Barry. Anyway, to be bright enough to read by, it would look rather garish. I agree that a standard lamp would be much more effective.

I imagine you were thinking of LED striplights that come on a roll. Self-adhesive; snip off to required length; connect by standard plug (3A fuse); or any other kind of switched connection.

Floor space limited for now. I've had to move my standard lamps and side tables in to another room for the foreseeable future. 

Back to the drawing board but I thank you all for your replies. At least I know not to waste money and time on strip LEDSs
